Celebrate Lunar New Year with an unforgettable experience at the Heights of Abraham

The Heights of Abraham is delighted to welcome you to the start of our 2024 season, coinciding with the Lunar New Year on the 10th of February. We are honoured to present an event that celebrates the dragon, a significant symbol for this year’s Lunar New Year. We invite families to join us for a week of cultural appreciation, enjoying the outdoors and creating memories in our tranquil setting.

Dazzling Dragon Displays and Vibrant Lanterns

The Rutland Cavern and Garden Pergola will be adorned with vibrant lantern displays, illuminating the area with a festive glow. Intricate paper dragons will be suspended throughout the estate and families are invited to join in the fun by counting these symbols of strength and good fortune.

Lion Dance Extravaganza (10th February ONLY)

The highlight of the celebration is the traditional Chinese Dancing Lion performance, a spectacle of colour, music, and dance. Accompanied by traditional musicians, the lion dancers will perform a special dance and a good luck ritual, symbolically throwing prosperity to the audience.

Fortune Awaits in Every Cable Car

As you ascend the heights in our cable cars, embrace the tradition of good fortune with a special treat – every rider will be offered a fortune cookie concealing a secret message of luck and prosperity for the year ahead.

Rupert Pugh, Development Director for the Heights said: “We are excited to share what we have got lined up for Chinese New Year. We are all set to light up the estate with dragons, lanterns, and the beautiful Lion Dance. It is going to be a fabulous week for families and friends to enjoy a day out, making memories and taking part in a fun cultural display.”

February Half Term Celebrations

2024 sees the anniversary of the construction of the cable car, with a new exhibition about how the cable cars were built, along with new exhibition displays in the Long View Gallery.  The Heights will be open every day during half term.

Discover the seven spectacular views of the Derwent valley, vast underground caverns, the historic Great Masson Cavern, the Victoria Prospect Tower, exhibitions, play areas, and beautifully landscaped gardens. Offering a blend of education, history, and exhilaration, the Heights of Abraham is a destination that delights visitors of all ages.
