Muhammad Ali, Director of Environmental Sustainability at University of Nottingham

Muhammad Ali is a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) with over 17 years’ experience leading sustainability strategy and delivering large-scale environmental improvement programmes across local and central government, the private sector and higher education.

He is currently Director of Environmental Sustainability at the University of Nottingham, where he leads the University’s sustainability agenda, driving progress on net zero carbon, climate resilience, circular economy and nature recovery, and embedding sustainability across operations, teaching, research and institutional strategy.

Muhammad brings extensive experience from central and local government, having led climate change and sustainability functions at the Ministry of Justice and Transport for London, and previously served as a local authority councillor and Cabinet Member (2018–2022) in London with responsibility for transport, climate change, air quality, parks, waste and recycling.

Alongside his executive roles, he serves as a Non-Executive Director at Nottingham City Transport and Trustee a t Keep Britain Tidy, providing strategic oversight and governance advice to both organisations.

He holds an MSc in Environmental Management from the University of Nottingham and is a full member of the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP).
