This summer, children can visit Nottingham City Libraries to join a superstar team and their marvellous mascots and get involved in a Summer Reading Challenge themed around the power of play, sport, games and physical activity.
Children can take part in the Challenge by signing up at their local library and collecting free materials as they keep reading. Once they have read 6 books, they will receive a certificate and an invite to a medal ceremony where they will be presented with their very own Summer Reading Challenge medal. By participating in the challenge at Nottingham City Libraries, young people will have the opportunity to explore new reading material, develop skills, and discover new interests.
Children can take part in the library any time after 8th July – it’s free and all children need is a library card. Not got one – head on over to your local city library to sign up!
Ready Set Read launches with an event at Clifton Library on July 8th 10am-12.30pm in partnership with the University of Nottingham, City Arts and Lakeside arts. Come along and discover the HeART project – where amazing science collides with beautiful art that children can create to take home and also help to build a special HeART book for the new Nottingham Central Library.
Throughout August there are Summer Reading Challenge events for children of all ages and interests across Nottingham City Libraries:
- Free crafts and activities in every library
- Magic, Music and Mayhem with Geoffrey Jumper and Mandy
- Author, poet, and illustrator Kev Payne leads a fast-paced, interactive session
- Caricaturist and Beano artist Kev Sutherland, writer, and illustrator from The Beano and Doctor Who, teaches you how to draw in a fun and interactive workshop

Councillor Pavlos Kotsonis, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said
“It’s great to see the Summer Reading Challenge in libraries keeping children reading over the summer. The Challenge is completely free so all children can take part and explore their local library.
“We are really excited to be partnering with the University of Nottingham, City Arts and Lakeside Arts for the HeART project to help us launch this year’s challenge at Clifton Library. There are lots of activities for children to take part in at all our libraries over the summer holidays where families can enjoy all the library has to offer. We are also delighted to support medal ceremonies led by local councillors in every library.”
Karen Napier, CEO, The Reading Agency said:
“We’re delighted to see how library partners across the country are organising their own events and activities to support this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. We are really looking forward to working closely with them to help get children reading, imagining, and staying active this summer.”
About The Summer Reading Challenge:
The Summer Reading Challenge is run by the Reading Agency for children across the UK and is delivered in partnership with public libraries. It has been running for the past 24 years and aims to foster a lifelong love of reading and tackle the drop off in reading that can happen over the school summer holidays. Children are challenged to read books over the summer and encouraged to enjoy reading for fun. Each year has a different theme – 2022 was ‘Gadgeteers’ and 2021 was ‘Wild World Heroes’. https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/

About University of Nottingham HeART project
heart is a creative exchange. The project uses textiles to engage communities with the scientific research of the Biodiscovery Institute. Based at University of Nottingham, the Institute works to prevent and cure disease. The project offers local people an insight into this important work. It is a chance to learn about the impact research will have on wellbeing; to add scientific context to their own stories of recovery and loss; to ponder the possible futures that the Biodiscovery Institute‘s work will bring about.
