The Grim Dark just got real: Games Workshop and Escapologic announce first-ever official Warhammer 40,000 live-action escape room

Games Workshop and Escapologic announce development of Immaterium, the world’s first live action escape room inspired by the books, games and miniatures of the world-renowned Warhammer 40,000 universe.

Games Workshop and Escapologic have announced a world first: development of Immaterium, an immersive live action escape room game. Located in Nottingham – home of the Warhammer hobby – Immaterium will offer a unique opportunity to experience the grim darkness of the far future first-hand.

Scheduled to open in April, Immaterium brings the raw emotion of Warpspace to life. It takes the thrill of miniature tabletop gaming and dials it up to 11 by physically plunging players into an elaborately detailed rogue trader ship heading towards a warp storm.

Created in conjunction with Games Workshop, Immaterium is a simultaneous cooperative team experience. For the first time ever, players will be able to jump into the world of Warhammer 40,000 and experience its myriad dangers for real. They will touch, smell and feel all areas of the ship and everything on it – including a talking Servitor. Up to five people at a time can immerse themselves in Immaterium, and explore the deepest recesses of a star-faring vessel facing imminent doom.

Players will need to share their skills and knowledge to win. The goal is to crack challenges and solve puzzles to access different areas, finish the game and escape before 60 minutes are up and the ship succumbs to the denizens of the Dark Powers. The threat of Chaos is ever-present.

Escapologic specialises in producing high quality, richly detailed real-life escape room games that look and feel so real fans won’t need a VR headset to believe they’ve dived into the world of Warhammer 40,000. Games Workshop is the company behind the globally recognised Warhammer brands and a household name within science fiction and tabletop gaming.

Simon Stokes, Escapologic’s CEO and Key Master, said: “Think real challenges, real stakes and real tension. We’ve worked very closely with Games Workshop to create a totally immersive experience that we are confident will chime with the experiences and expectations of a passionately devoted fanbase. Fans can look forward to intricately designed areas that interconnect in ingenious ways. And fiendishly challenging puzzles, games and codes. That’s all I’m saying for now – we don’t want to give the whole game away.”
