Broadway Cinema and Lakeside Arts are excited to once again join forces to present a series of outdoor cinema screenings this August Bank Holiday weekend and beyond, taking place on summer evenings in the picturesque parklands at Lakeside.
After a successful first series of outdoor screenings in summer 2024, this year’s line-up features another eclectic selection of cinema, ranging from magnificent music docs to dazzling Japanese animation.
This sunset cinema series opens on Friday 22 August with Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s Oscar-winning concert documentary Summer of Soul – using rediscovered footage to tell the story of a forgotten Black music festival in Harlem, New York in the summer of 1969.
More music history the following evening on Saturday 23 August, as audiences are transported to Havana with Wim Wenders’ acclaimed 1999 documentary Buena Vista Social Club, capturing a forgotten generation of legendary Cuban musicians as they enjoy an unexpected encounter with international stardom.
The following weekend, Studio Ghibli anime master Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron graces the big screen on Friday 29 August, before the season comes to a close on Saturday 30 August in 1960s New York – Timothée Chalamet stars in the brilliant Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.
Broadway Cinema’s CEO Lucy Askew is looking forward to returning to Lakeside for the screenings this month: “After last year’s success, it’s so exciting to be bringing outdoor cinema back to Lakeside, one of Nottingham’s most beautiful locations. With concert film, documentary, animation and award-winning drama, our eclectic film series offers a great opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate cinema at sunset!”
Lakeside Arts’ Head of Audience Development & Marketing Timothy Rushby is pleased to continue this collaboration with Broadway this summer: “We’re delighted to be welcoming Broadway back to Lakeside Arts, building on last year’s successful outdoor screenings. Lakeside’s beautiful parkland surrounds, especially on a warm summer’s evening, are a wonderful location to enjoy a film with friends and family. We hope to welcome many new and long-standing audiences alike over the coming weeks for these exciting and diverse films.”
Audiences will be able to purchase drinks, popcorn and other cinema snacks on the night, but everyone is welcome to bring their own picnic to make the nights as memorable as possible, as Broadway brings August to a close in spectacular style at Lakeside.
Broadway at Lakeside’s outdoor cinema screenings begin this weekend on Friday 22 August and Saturday 23 August, and continue the following weekend on Friday 29 August and Saturday 30 August 2025.
