Neghat Khan was born, raised and educated in Nottingham and has lived there all her life. In 2013, Neghat became a Councillor for the Dales ward, in doing so become the first Female British Pakistani councillor elected to Nottingham City council. In 2016, Neghat became a member of the Council’s Executive, holding the position of Executive Assistant for Housing and Flooding.
In May 2018, she became Portfolio Holder for Education and Skills, before taking responsibility for Early Years, Education and Employment. In May 2024, Neghat was elected Leader of Nottingham City Council, becoming the Council’s second-ever female leader and first British Pakistani councillor elected to lead her home city of Nottingham. Alongside her duties in Nottingham, Neghat sits on the Board of Core Cities UK, and is an active member of the Local Government Association, sitting on both the Improvement Committee and Councillors Forum.
