As part of its commitment to Pride Month and Nottingham Pride, Nottingham Arts Theatre is proud to present Based on a True Story Too which explores the practical, political and personal issues of depicting past gay experience in the light of modern sensibilities.
Examining the lives of Edward Carpenter, D.H.Lawrence, Frederick Rolfe (Baron Corvo), Lord Alfred Doiuglas and Oscar Wilde, the Nottingham poet, playwright and theatre director, Campbell Kay, reflects on the depiction of historic gay lives through the lens of contemporary experience. This dramatised performance piece references Campbell Kay’s newly published play Fatal Friendship (Douglas and Wilde), his latest collection of poems Letters From Venice (Rolfe/Corvo) and Phoenix Rising (Lawrence).
Campbell Kay’s last performance piece, Based On A True Story: D.H.Lawrence, Sir Dolald Wolfit and Me was performed at the Crail Festival and subsequently at Nottingham Arts Theatre to some critical acclaim:
“[Campbell Kay’s] versatility as a poet and playwright was apparent as he explored love, loss and loneliness from Devils’ Wine, his collection of poems. A more sinister side was portrayed in Phoenix Rising, his play about D.H.Lawrence. Campbell Kay undoubtedly ensured that this literary event was a notable success.”
From a review of Based On A True Story by Commodore Ronald Sandford, CBE, Crail Festival Committee.
