Career Champions: Geanina Stoicanea

Career Champions: Geanina Stoicanea talks about how a passion for tourism shaped her dream career

Welcome to our “Career Champions” series, where we’ll be spotlighting a group of talented hospitality professionals from Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, sharing their personal journeys and insights into how they began and progressed within the industry.

In this first edition, we’re excited to speak with Geanina Stoicanea, Sales Manager at Nottingham Venues, who will share her experiences and reflections on her career journey.

How did you first enter the industry? Can you share your professional journey?

“Originally from Romania, I pursued studies in Tourism and the Hospitality industry. However, I quickly realised that studying the field and building a professional career within it are two entirely different experiences.

I began my journey in Romania as a receptionist before expanding my horizons by working in Cyprus and Jersey. About 13 years ago, I transitioned into the UK market, where I have since built my career. Along the way, I’ve gained invaluable experience in customer service, fine dining, office dynamics, emotional intelligence, personal growth and much more”.

Could you describe your current role, including your day-to-day responsibilities?

“As Sales Manager for Nottingham Venues, my role is dynamic, with no two days ever the same.

My responsibilities range from conducting site visits and attending exhibitions to hosting FAM trips, building and nurturing relationships, creating bespoke proposals, managing the transient market, and overseeing corporate rates. And of course, there’s plenty of admin to keep me on my toes! Every day brings something new and exciting to tackle”.

What aspects of your current role do you find the most rewarding?

“That’s an excellent question! Several things come to mind, such as building relationships with new clients and agents, receiving positive feedback about our services, and, of course, securing new business”.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to join the industry?

“The hospitality industry is undoubtedly exciting and offers plenty of opportunities for growth if you’re willing to put in the effort. With dedication, everything can be learned—just show up, stay curious, apply what you’ve learned, and don’t forget to smile!

Starting a career in hospitality can be incredibly rewarding with the right attitude and work ethic”.

In your opinion, what makes hospitality and tourism an exciting career path?

“Hospitality and tourism are exciting career paths because they offer dynamic, people-centred experiences that constantly evolve. It’s a field where you can combine passion for people, creativity, and adventure, while also contributing to meaningful experiences for others”.

What are your goals and aspirations for the future?

“I am excited about the future, as I believe I’ve reached a point in my life and career where opportunities for growth are greater than ever, thanks to my personal development plan and ambition”.

Thank you, Geanina for sharing with us a little insight into your profession and hard work from all of us at the Meet in Nottingham team, as you can tell, having both drive and passion is key within the hospitality industry. It doesn’t matter where you start, there are endless opportunities for career growth and progression.
