Nottingham brewery honours Bill Oddie with special charity beer

Award-winning Blue Monkey Brewery has revived its popular Funky Gibbon ale in memory of one of Britain’s best-loved entertainers and wildlife champions, Bill Oddie.

The independent brewery, based in Giltbrook, Nottinghamshire, has relaunched its 4.2% amber ale, Funky Gibbon, following the recent passing of Bill Oddie. Named after the iconic 1975 Goodies song, the beer has been given a special new recipe to mark the occasion.

Blue Monkey will also be making donations from the beer to WWF in recognition of Bill Oddie’s lifelong commitment to protecting wildlife and inspiring generations to appreciate the natural world.

Bill Oddie became a household name through The Goodies before dedicating much of his later life to wildlife conservation and broadcasting, becoming one of Britain’s most recognised voices for nature.

Blue Monkey Brewery has been brewing award-winning beers in Nottinghamshire for the past 18 years, collecting numerous national awards while building a loyal following across the region.

The commemorative beer reflects the brewery’s love of creating characterful beers with a story behind them, while supporting a cause that resonates with both the team and their customers.

Blue Monkey has faced its own challenges in recent years. The brewery successfully overcame planning hurdles to open its Tap Room in Giltbrook, which has since become a thriving destination for beer lovers. The business is now preparing to open an exciting first-floor extension as it continues to invest in its future despite the pressures facing independent breweries.

Ian Wesley, Commercial Director at Blue Monkey Brewery, said:

“Bill Oddie brought joy to millions of people through his comedy and later inspired so many to care about British wildlife. We felt bringing back Funky Gibbon was a fitting way to celebrate his life while supporting a cause that was so close to his heart. We hope people will enjoy raising a glass to Bill while helping us support WWF.”

Funky Gibbon will be available at Blue Monkey Brewery’s Tap Room in Giltbrook and across all Organ Grinder pubs, with additional availability through selected Blue Monkey stockists.
