Nottingham City Council has been ranked as one the highest performing local authorities in a Government review of active travel infrastructure and support.
Active Travel England – the government’s executive agency tasked with making walking, wheeling and cycling the preferred choice for everyday trips – last week published its updated active travel capability ratings for local authorities.
Nottingham is one of just six local authorities to achieve a 3 rating, putting it among the top councils. All 80 local authorities outside London took part in the process.
Nottingham City Council demonstrates ‘Very strong local leadership, comprehensive plans, and a significant network in place with a growing number of people choosing to walk, wheel and cycle.’
Nottingham City Council has been successful in attracting unprecedented levels of funding for cycling and walking, such as through the Active Travel Fund and the Transforming Cities Fund, meaning that safe cycle routes can be added, making getting around the city easier and greener for everyone.
Nottingham City Council has expanded its cycling infrastructure significantly in recent years, with new various cycle projects completing in summer / autumn 2024, including:
City Centre Cycle Routes – our cross-city network from east to west is now complete as far as Pennyfoot Street
Beechdale Wigman– a new safe segregated cycle lane along Wigman Road and Hollington Road in Bilborough which will be complete in the next few weeks
St Ann’s Well Road – a new safe segregated cycle lane along St Ann’s Well Road which will be complete in the next few weeks
Nottingham City Council Leader and Executive Member for Strategic Regeneration, Transport and Communications, Councillor Neghat Khan said:
“It’s wonderful to continue to get this recognition of our team’s hard work in securing funding and working with partners and funders to develop safe new cycle routes around the city.”
“Being able to cycle easily to school, to work or around the city benefits everyone, taking cars off our roads and making our air cleaner. We look forward to working with partners to secure more funding and expand our network further in the future.”
