NTU puts patients and the public at the heart of teaching its future healthcare professionals

Nottingham Trent University (NTU) is inviting members of the public to help enhance the education of its students looking to become future healthcare professionals.

A new involvement group is being created by the University’s Institute of Health and Allied Professions (IHAP) to contribute to the skills and knowledge of those studying Nursing, Paramedicine and Allied Professions.

Members of the public, patients, people who use health and social care services and their carers are invited to share their perspectives and experiences.

Through meaningful dialogue with a diverse group of volunteers, the involvement group aims to provide future health professionals with a deeper understanding of high quality, compassionate and inclusive healthcare practice.

Volunteers will be given advice, support and development for the activities they wish to take part in. There will also be some opportunities for paid activities.

While there are no specific membership requirements for volunteers, they will be expected to commit to participating for a few hours each year and have some lived experience of healthcare and/or social care as a user of services, a carer or a family member.

The involvement group welcomes participation from all communities, groups, genders, ages, ethnicities, and disabilities. Families can also volunteer together.

Farai Pfende, senior lecturer in Nursing at NTU’s School of Social Sciences and an involvement lead for the group, said:

“This involvement group will give us a great opportunity to improve our teaching, curriculum development and assessments. We want to put lived experience at the centre of the learning journey for our students and provide them with perspectives and experiences that will help forge their future in healthcare”.

IHAP is NTU’s home to world-class teaching, practice, research, and scholarship within its healthcare education offering and features mock hospital wards, consultation and counselling rooms, creative teaching spaces and specialist equipment.

If you would like to apply for the IHAP involvement group you can complete an expression of interest form here. If you require any more information or have any other enquiries, please contact HAPInvolvement@ntu.ac.uk.
