Office expansion tops 15 years of success for Nottingham firm

The innovative business behind contactless ticketing technology on Nottingham’s trams and buses as well as vehicle location technology has marked 15 years in the UK with a major office refurbishment, increasing the size of its Midlands base.

INIT – which set up in Nottingham in 2005 and opened its subsidiary INIT Ltd.  in 2010 – has significantly increased the size of its team in recent years to help deliver on a series of major contract wins.

The milestone was celebrated with a champagne reception at INIT’s newly expanded Lace Market office, followed by an exclusive event at Cleaver & Wake hosted by comedian Henning Wehn.

The company – which is headquartered in Karlsruhe, Germany – was recently awarded a contract for the replacement of the existing Automatic Vehicle Location system (iBus) for Transport for London’s (TfL) buses.

To support the growth driven by this and other major projects, the business has recently undergone major office refurbishment works to boost its UK base and create a modern, attractive office space in the heart of Nottingham.

Jens Mullak, managing director of INIT, said:

“Marking 15 years of INIT Ltd. in the UK is a proud milestone for INIT, and this office expansion reflects our commitment to innovation and growth in the Midlands.

“Since establishing a presence in Nottingham, we’ve worked tirelessly to enhance public transport systems with cutting-edge contactless ticketing technology. This investment will help us continue to support our growing team and deliver exceptional service to our partners across the UK”.

The business is well known in Nottingham for its work supporting the ticketless systems on the city’s trams and buses, having rolled out daily contactless tickets using the Nottingham Contactless website, with capping, across Nottingham City Transport (NCT), Nottingham Express Trams (NET) and the Linkbus network in 2022.

That innovation was the first multi-operator ticketing system in the United Kingdom outside London, and Mullak believes that this and the recent win with TfL showcases the level of innovation within the business.

Mullak said:

“The ground-breaking achievements across the UK underscore INIT’s commitment to driving innovation in public transport. By providing seamless and efficient ticketing and AVL solutions, we aim to set new standards for cities across the UK and beyond.”
