Women in Music Nottingham To Champion Region’s Talent

The initiative set up to champion women and non-binary people working in music across the East Midlands is returning with a launch event in Nottingham.

The first Women in Music event at Rescue Rooms on 21 August will feature headline acoustic performances from some of Nottingham’s most exciting female artists, an industry mixer, open mic, live music and female DJs.

Following acoustic sets from Evening Plans, Julia Rose and Ok, Lady, the talented female resident DJs of Dazed Muzic, titans in the dance music scene, will take over the decks at 10pm.

The Women in Music initiative aims to address the gender imbalance within the music industry. Led by a group of female employees at DHP Family, the platform will bring together women and non-binary people from across the music industry, encompassing all aspects from artists, promoters, venue operators, managers and technicians to DJs, record labels, agents, PR and many more.

Michele Somers, DHP Family, said:

“There is so much incredible talent across Nottingham’s music community, and we wanted to create a space to celebrate that. Women in Music is about bringing people together, supporting one another, sharing experiences and opening doors for new opportunities. We want the group to be a cheerleader for women and non-binary people in the industry, whether they’re just starting out or already established in their careers.”

The ambition is to develop regular networking events, workshops, panel discussions and development opportunities that help people build connections, share knowledge and support each other’s growth within the industry.

The 21 August event is open to people of all genders and welcomes attendees from every part of the music industry – whether they are established professionals, emerging artists, students or those looking to take their first steps into the sector.

Women in Music Nottingham has previously delivered successful events and networking opportunities within the city. This event marks an exciting relaunch for the group as it looks to build a stronger year-round programme of activity supporting women and non-binary people across all areas of the music industry.

Michele added:

“The night-time economy should be for everyone. We want people from all backgrounds to see the music industry as a place where they belong and can build a successful career. This event is about creating opportunities and making connections, while showcasing the incredible talent that already exists within Nottingham’s music community. By bringing together artists, industry professionals and those just starting out, we hope to help create a more representative, inclusive and supportive industry for the future.”

Women in Music aims to encourage men in the industry to platform and support their female/gender non-conforming peers to eventually bridge the gender gap within the music industry. This event is open to both gender minorities and allies alike.

Doors open at 5pm, where attendees will be greeted with a welcome drink and an opportunity to network with others in the industry, followed by the commencement of Acoustic Rooms at 6pm.
