Celebrating Nottingham’s Heritage Champions 2020

There’s no denying that Nottingham has a diverse and fascinating history and heritage. From castles to caves to civil war, lace to Luddites to literature – not to mention the legend of Robin Hood – our city is absolutely filled with intriguing stories. Marketing NG were delighted to be involved with the newly established Nottingham Heritage Partnership (which has been supported by Heritage Lottery Fund East Midlands) in order to help keep the stories alive for future generations.

The Nottingham Heritage Partnership aims to preserve the past, celebrate the present and contribute to the future. We attended the first ever Nottingham Heritage Champions event, which celebrated 12 individuals and organisations who have made fantastic contributions to Nottingham’s heritage. The Partnership used an open survey inviting nominations for Nottingham’s Heritage Champions to identify “individuals and organisations who embody ‘The Story of Nottingham’, and who contribute their time, energy and passion to enhancing and celebrating Nottingham’s heritage” – recognising the people who are the heart of heritage in Nottingham.

A huge congratulations to the Nottingham Heritage Champions for 2020:

  • Ezekial Bone (Ade Andrews) – for his work in celebrating Nottingham’s heritage and history through character-led tours as Robin Hood. He was named in over 60% of responses to the online survey.
  • Left Lion Magazine – for its work on ‘Overall’ and the ‘Lord of Milan’ heritage projects, and its regular Nottingham heritage column ‘Out of Time’. Recognised in our online survey as the primary source of information about culture and heritage events in Nottingham
  • Feixue Huangdu – NTU student whose vlogs on Nottingham’s independent museums attract audiences of over 400k in her native China.
  • Erica Winters – who for over 20 years has ran the ‘Nature in Mind’ access programme at St Anne’s Allotments (a Grade 2 listed, 75-acre greenspace hosting some 670 allotment gardens in the heart of Nottingham)
  • Sarah Manton – Artist and Director at Curious Nottingham, urban greening and open space activist
  • New Art Exchange – in recognition of its work revealing and celebrating Nottingham’s diverse histories, including in its 2019/20 season, ‘When the Snow Melts’, which charted the stories of Nottingham’s Muslim communities who were involved in The Second World War.
  • Norma Gregory – historian, author and founder of Nottingham News Centre CIC – in recognition of her vast body of research work into Nottingham’s African Caribbean heritage, including the 2019/20 National Coal Mining Museum exhibition: ‘Digging Deep: Coal Miners of African Caribbean Heritage’
