Blue Plaque to Nan Green ceremony in Beeston

The second blue plaque to a woman has been installed in Beeston, as a result of a Beeston Civic Society Lady Plaques campaign.

Her name was Nan Green.

She lived at Surrey Cottage, 12 Glebe Street, Beeston

Nan Green was born in Surrey Cottage in 1904 and grew up in Beeston, attending West End School. She went on to dedicate her life to socialist humanitarian work across the world, including: joining the International Brigades’ against fascism during the Spanish Civil War; accompanying 5000 refugee children from France to safety in Mexico; as a translator in China, and in civil defence work in Britain during WWII.

The Civic Society will mark the occasion by having a dedication ceremony at the plaque on Sunday, 9 February at 12 noon. Green family members, and donors will be in attendance, and Broxtowe Mayor Cllr. Sue Paterson will close proceedings.
