UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre nominee opens its doors

Nottingham Playhouse has been named as one of the finalists in the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre Award 2023 and invites everyone to attend its upcoming Open Day on Saturday 2 September.

The UK Theatre award nomination sees Nottingham Playhouse shortlisted along with Leicester Curve and the National Youth Theatre, with the winner being announced on 8 October at a ceremony at the Guildhall, London.

Adam Penford, Artistic Director, Nottingham Playhouse, said:

“We are thrilled to be selected as finalists. Our mission is for Nottingham Playhouse to be a space where everyone feels they belong. It’s what drives our staff to go above and beyond; our programming to be reflective of our city; our Participation programme to be diverse and inclusive, and the experience for our audience to be of the highest quality.”

The Open Day on Saturday 2 September offers a day of free activities for everyone and is an opportunity for people to see behind the scenes with backstage tours, drama workshops, storytelling sessions and much more. An important part of the day will be the Playhouse Memorabilia Sale, with the opportunity to find a prop, costume or poster from your favourite show. Bookings for activities open on 25 August on the website nottinghamplayhouse.co.uk.

The UK Theatre award nomination came after an industry panel of judges looked at how welcoming venues are in terms of ‘place,’ ‘people’ and ‘programme,’ considering everything from building design and adaptations to participation projects, staff, freelancers and the local community.

Hannah Essex, co-CEO of Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre, said:

Each year we enjoy celebrating the theatres that go above and beyond to provide accessible and inclusive hubs for audiences, casts and creatives. With a huge array of wonderful theatres to choose from, the finalists are three very different venues that stood out for unique reasons, but there is a common quality among them – their mission to give back to their local communities and supporters. The panel are very much looking forward to their visits in the coming weeks, and to crowning the overall winner at the UK Theatre Awards in October.”
